From an early age Melanie carried with her a camera and pocketsful of film, documenting environment and human interaction. Through extensive travel and cultural observation, this passion flourished.
Melanie is based in east London where she works in a community arts space, currently focusing on traditional colour photographic print.
To capture just a small essence of a scene can be a challenge. Hand-made negatives in black & white, the cross-process of colour film and the application of various materials for print and projection enhance traditional photographic practice. Layers occur and a story can be told.
Her love of the outdoors is reflected in many of her works and has become part of a professional practice through the documentation of architecture, interiors and gardens, many of which have featured in magazines, brochures & commercial websites.
There is a great freedom in working as a solo artist, providing a sense of clarity and focus to varying projects.
Melanie spends many a meditative hour in the darkroom claiming pleasure in the slow process, and the raw markings and mishaps that occur through mechanical production: conveying narrative and texture to each image.
